Make This Easy, No Sew, Steven Universe Halloween Costume

Sharing is caring!

Halloween will soon be here. My youngest son asked me to make him a Steven Universe Halloween costume. Up until a few months ago, I must admit I did not know who Steven Universe is, but my son showed me cartoons on YouTube. You can also watch this show on the Cartoon Network. I can see why it appeals to him – it’s funny and silly, just like him. Steven Universe is a crystal gem, which is a type of superhero.

It all started with my son getting the Steven Universe Funko Pop this past summer when we were on vacation.  Since then, he’s gotten the Steven Universe baseball cap and the t-shirt. So all he needed for his costume was the cheeseburger backpack. There is a whole episode on the cheeseburger backpack. He needs it to save the world.

My son found this YouTube video on how to make the cheeseburger backpack. It seemed easy enough – the whole thing can be made with just felt squares which are abundant and reasonably cheap at Michaels.

To make the backpack, you will need the following felt squares:

  • 3 x light brown (bun)
  • 4 x dark brown (meat patty)
  • 1 x green (lettuce)
  • 1 x red (tomato)
  • 1 x yellow (cheese) (I actually got 2 of the yellow to make a slight modification)
  • 1 x white (straps)

You will also need the following:

  • scissors
  • a button
  • scrap piece of yarn
  • glue gun and lots of glue sticks (this project used about 6 of my small glue gun sticks – so quite a lot of glue).
  • fibre fill batting (although I used some packing foam sheets that had come with a parcel and I had kept – it worked just as well)

I had some of the felt colours already at home so didn’t buy all of these squares listed above. Instead of white, I had some cream-coloured felt which I substituted for the straps. I used spare buttons from my button box. I always have lots of yarn around and I typically keep a bag of glue sticks for my glue gun handy.  So for me, I only had to get the felt squares.  They are 59 cents each at Michaels, so this project came in under $10CAD easily.

The YouTube video was very easy to follow and it didn’t take long at all. It’s actually pretty cute. The finished project is about 11 inches across and tall. Size is determined by the felt squares – you could easily make it bigger using larger pieces of felt. As mentioned, I stuffed the bun and the meat patty with foam packaging. This worked perfectly fine. I tend to keep stuff like that when we get a package or buy something that is wrapped in that material. It came in really handy for this project.

The only change I made was I bought 2 of the yellow felt, instead of 1, to make an additional pocket. I glued 2 squares of yellow together around the edges (keep the top open), and added another button and closure to make a second pocket. This way, the backpack has 2 pockets – the meat patty & the cheese. My son believes that while trick or treating, he can stash some of his candy in the backpack – therefore a second pocket was necessary! The pockets also hold some crocheted donuts that I made him previously. Apparently, Steven Universe likes donuts! He also likes Cookie Cat – which is an ice cream sandwich in the shape of a cat’s head.

What do you think of this easy project? We added the t-shirt and baseball cap purchased from Hot Topic. Then you just need to add a pair of jeans. The smile on my son’s face says it all to me. Do you know who Steven Universe is? Will you be making a cheeseburger backpack?
