I love a good summer dress. The latest from Made for Mermaids, the M4M Heidi Halter does not disappoint. Once I saw the halter top style, I jumped on the chance to help test the pattern.
Made for Mermaids has such great patterns. They are truly speaking to my style. I love sharing them with you.

The M4M Heidi Halter
The M4M Heidi is characterized by the halter style. I find halter styles quite flattering and love the fact that it offers a different kind of look.
As usual, the M4M offers a variety of different options, making it a very economical purchase. It is both a top and a dress. For the dress, the waist line falls at the natural waist.
The M4M Heidi Halter features a shelf bra which adds some minimal support. I chose to still wear a bra with it as I felt more comfortable this way. Another option would be to sew some cups into it.
Sewing Pattern Options
- 3 different top lengths: crop, high hip and full hip.
- 2 different dress lengths: mini and dress length (just below the knee).
Due to the halter style, all options are sleeveless.
Fabric and Notions for the M4M Heidi Halter
The M4M Heidi is drafted for light to medium-weight knit fabrics. If making the dress option (which I always do), you want a fabric with some nice drape and flow.
For this pattern, you will also need 2 types of elastic – regular or clear for the back of the bodice (optional, but recommended; I used it and it certainly helps with the fit), as well as picot elastic for the shelf bra.
You will also need a swimsuit clip to hold it together at the neck. These can easily be found in the notions section of your fabric store, or online. They come in a couple of different sizes and a few different finishes – clear, or various metal finishes.
M4M Heidi Halter Sewing Pattern Review
The sewing pattern has minimal pieces – bodice front, bodice back, and skirt. The bodice contains a shelf bra and so there is an extra piece for the front as well.
I used my serger, cover stitch, and sewing machine to make this dress. It could definitely be used with only one machine, but since I have all 3, I used them. I find construction easier, having all 3 machines.
I used the serger for the basic construction of the dress, including the addition of the elastic in both the back, as well as the shelf bra. I used the cover stitch machine not only to hem but to topstitch the elastic for the shelf bra as well. The sewing machine was used to attach the swimsuit clip at the back of the neck. Since it was a knit fabric, a simple zig-zag stitch was all that was needed.
As mentioned, the halter style and shelf bra do not provide much support. You may wish to sew in cups or wear it with a strapless bra. It is a matter of personal preference.
There really isn’t a whole lot to say. The pattern is relatively easy to construct. The instructions are easy to follow. This is yet another great pattern from Made for Mermaids.
I love the halter style and was happy to be able to test this pattern. This is going to be such a great summer dress. It also makes a great tank top as well. Someone in the testing group made a swimsuit as well. This sewing pattern is so versatile. There are so many options.
