Anyone who crafts will tell you that there is a lot to keep track of. There are supplies and tools, not to mention ideas and patterns.

For most people, crafting also tends to be fluid and flexible. Things are bought, things are used, things are given away. It’s always changing.

I decided to take all these aspects and combine them into a workbook for anyone who knits or crochets.

The Yarn Project Workbook

The Yarn Project Workbook is a 24 page PDF workbook containing various worksheets for inventorying supplies, keeping track of patterns, and helping you organize your projects.

Ask yourself this:

  1. Do you have a mountain of yarn and aren’t quite sure what you have?
  2. Have you ever bought a notion or tool and then realized you already have it?
  3. Do you have patterns that you have bookmarked or purchased, but have forgotten about?
  4. Do you have about 4 projects on the go and can’t remember what needle or hook you used for what project?

The Yarn Project Workbook is designed for you to print out whatever sheet you want. Not all worksheets will work for all people. I’ve given you options to find what works for you.

You may need some duplicate sheets – simply print out more. While they are specific in nature, I tried to also make it somewhat general so that you can come up with your own system.

For instance – the yarn inventory page can be printed out in multiple pages for you to organize your stash. One friend does a separate page for each fibre. So she uses one page for all her cotton yarn, another page for all her silk yarn, etc. I personally use a separate page for each category or weight of yarn. So here we are, two different people, using the same inventory sheets, but in our own way.

How to Use the Yarn Project Workbook

I suggest you keep all the pages together in a binder. That way, you can easily add more pages and keep them together. You can also remove pages or re-do pages as necessary. The beauty of it being in a binder is that it can be flexible and fluid.

Keep the binder in a handy place where you can not only refer to it regularly but update it as necessary.

You can even get fancy and add some tabs to differentiate the sections to your liking. You can have a separate tab with each page or group them together. For instance, you can have all your inventory pages together in one section.

Why Did I Write the Yarn Project Workbook?

I find that there is just so much I want to do and make. I also find I stock up on yarn and other materials. It doesn’t take much to be overwhelmed.

Everyone organizes their stuff with their own system. What works for you may not work for me. There is no one way to do it. There is no perfect way, either. I tried to develop something that would work for a variety of people.

You can buy some beautiful and functional yarn project planners and workbooks. They are beautiful and well designed. However, as one friend put it – it’s too beautiful. She was too afraid to write in it, for fear of messing it up. Because of the fluid nature of supplies, she was afraid of ruining the pages as they would not always be accurate. I’ve tried to create something that not only looks good but works with the fluid nature of our craft.

Another strategy is to use a notebook to write everything down. I must admit, that I’ve tried this and it works to some extent. I just find that then the onus is on me to organize it in a way so that it is easy to follow and understand. Otherwise, it can easily and quickly become a book of random notes written down.

While a notebook works for some, again the fluid nature of crafting can limit you once you run out of room on a page. You can start another page, but it won’t be consecutive. With my Yarn Project Notebook, you can print off another page when the first one gets full and since they are separate pages, you can put them together.

One strategy, which I will admit to using, is to jot things down on little pieces of paper. But then I can’t find where I’ve put that paper. Then I spend more time looking for that paper (quite often to no avail) than actually doing what I want to do, which is knit or crochet.

So the idea of the Yarn Project Workbook is to combine all of these strategies into one, cohesive workbook.

Highlights of the Yarn Project Workbook

There are 3 main components of the Yarn Project Workbook.

The first component is the inventory. If you’re like me, you have more yarn, notions and patterns than you realize. I found that I needed a system to record everything, otherwise, I end up buying duplicates, or not completing a project because I don’t think I have all the materials.

To complement the inventory, I also have wishlists. It’s always good to keep a list of things you wish to get. But the key is to revisit it from time to time. A few months later, will you find yourself still wanting it or has the novelty worn off? Thinking of treating yourself? Well here’s the list to work off of!

Another part of the Yarn Project Workbook is the planning sheets. I have a variety of planning sheets to help you organize individual, small projects, larger projects and even that dream project of yours.

Finally, you can use this workbook as a record of your work. It’s nice to look back and see what you’ve completed. It’s good to reflect on a project and celebrate things like a new technique learned. Also good is to ask yourself, “If I were to do this project again, what would I do differently?”.
