Aglets are those little plastic or metal things on the ends of drawstrings or shoelaces. They keep the ends from fraying and unravelling. They come in all different colours and shapes. They’re easy to apply too.
You can add aglets to cording that you’ve bought or when you sew your own drawstring. You can even replace broken ones.

Where to Find Aglets
Finding aglets was not that easy for me. My local fabric store did not carry them, despite offering cording and other notions that would work for drawstrings.
For me, the easiest source was online. I got a kit with a bunch as I like to have them on hand.
How to Apply the Aglets
The aglets are open. You just tuck the end of the drawstring or cord into the aglet and then squeeze it shut with pliers. I like to use needlenose pliers.
It’s not easy getting that end into the aglet sometimes. Lay the drawstring on the top of the open aglet and push it down into it.
Use the pliers to squeeze the aglet closed.
If the drawstring is bigger or wider, you may find it tricky. If so, try using a needle and thread. Knot your thread and sew a couple of stitches at the tip to secure the thread. You can fold over the end to make it narrower.
Just like before, tuck the drawstring into the open aglet.
Use the needle and thread to keep the drawstring in the aglet. You can also use it to hold it down in the aglet while you close it.
Aglets add a nice finishing touch to garments. I like to use them on the drawstrings of hoodies. I love how a simple thing like this can make such a difference to your sewing projects.

Thanks for this! I’ve been trying to squeeze a drawstring into an aglet with no luck. Your thread method saved my sanity 💕
