You’ve seen these ornaments before – they have a very rustic, country look. They’re so easy to make as well! I love that you can customize them to say anything you want.
There are 3 elements to this project – the wood, the black chalkboard paint and the vinyl.
What You Need
- wooden rounds or slices – these can be purchased at craft stores or online. You could also cut your own. I was lucky enough to have a friend who was trimming their birch tree and then used a chop saw to cut up the branches for me
- chalk paint – read my post all about how to make your own chalk paint
- brush to apply the chalk paint – since this is a small project, you can use a small paintbrush or a small, round foam brush. I prefer using a round foam brush, available from craft stores
- baby wipes – I just use the ones from the dollar store for all my crafts (they’re super handy and cheap!)
- 120 grit (or similar) sandpaper for distressing
- vinyl – to apply a message. You can use either adhesive vinyl or heat transfer vinyl
- drill – if you purchase wooden slices from a store or online, they may already have a hole in them for hanging. Since mine were “from the wild”, I needed to drill a hole in them. I used a 1/8 drill bit.
- twine or ribbon for hanging
- optional – other little decorations to add to the wooden chalkboard ornament (I am partial to jingle bells – I tend to put them on everything).

Directions on How To Make Wooden Chalkboard Ornaments
- Make sure your wooden slices are clean of dust and debris. A quick wipe with a baby wipe can often do the trick. Allow
to dry . - Apply the chalk paint to the wooden slice. I like to leave a border around – so I don’t paint right to the very edge. I follow the natural contours of the wooden slice as well, so it is not perfectly round.
- Allow the chalk paint to dry.
- Rub gently with the sandpaper to distress it. Wipe clean with a baby wipe again. Allow
to dry . - Since my wooden slices weren’t perfectly round, I had to decide which end was the “top”. Consider how balanced it would be for hanging and so where you’d like to have the hole drilled.
- Apply vinyl with whatever saying you would like. Both adhesive vinyl and heat transfer vinyl (HTV) work. I decide by the intricacy of the design as I find HTV easier to apply. Read my post All About Adhesive Vinyl here for information on how to weed and apply. You may also remember how I put vinyl on chalkboard a few days ago. For more information on how to put HTV on wood, check out my blog post here.
- Drill a hole at the top.
- Insert twine or ribbon for hanging.
There you go! That’s all it is. Don’t these wooden chalkboard ornaments look great? This would also be a great group crafting activity as these are small.
