How to Make an Easy Sew Mommy and Me Hospital Set
I’ve been sewing up a storm lately and now that I’ve sewn a number of different things, I’m about to share my sewing experiences with you. One of the first things I want to share is this easy sew mommy and me hospital set.
The concept of a mommy and me hospital set is simple – it’s something for the mom as well as for the baby in a fabric that matches or coordinates. The idea is that it is something that the mommy can wear in the hospital and the new baby would have a matching or coordinating outfit. Using the same fabric can make for a cute set and is perfect for all those photo moments.
I wanted to sew up something special for a coworker who was expecting her first child. I really love that the mommy and me hospital set also includes something special for the mommy as well.
Free Sewing Patterns Suggestions for a Mommy and Me Hospital Set
I’ve looked around for lots of sewing patterns that would work for such a set and I’m so happy that I found a number of FREE patterns. I’m sure there are others out there, as well as a number of paid patterns, but I want to share these ones with you.
For the mommy, you can sew up a robe – great for before the baby is born, to wear in the hospital and postpartum. Robes are generous with sizing so they will fit both before and after. Also nice for the mommy is a headband that can be made out of a small scrap of fabric.
Then sew up a couple of coordinating baby items. What you sew up will be determined by how much fabric you have, as well as the type of fabric.
Here are a number of FREE sewing patterns for a mommy and me hospital set.
- Mommy to be Robe – Rad Grab and Go Robe, free file on their Facebook Group. You must join the FB group in order to access the free pattern.
- Mommy Headband – Faux Knot Headband; there are several free patterns for headbands online but I like this one as it doesn’t use very much fabric – just one rectangular piece and so this is great for your scraps.
- Baby Leggings – Patterns for Pirates Petite Pegs
- Baby Hat – Patterns for Pirates Teeny Beanie
- Baby Lap Tee – Patterns for Pirates Wee Lap Tee and check out the hack to extend it into a baby sleeper found here from Sly Fox Fabrics
- Diaper Cover Shorts – Brindille & Twig Bummies
Yes! Those are all free sewing patterns! Just download and print out. You’ll have to tape them together to form the patterns but that’s a small price to pay considering that they are free.
These patterns are also so easy to sew. I made mine with my Babylock Acclaim serger and CoverStitch machine, but a regular sewing machine works just as well. I love working with knit fabrics.
Fabric Recommendations
There are a number of knit fabrics that are recommended for this project.
Regardless of the fabric you choose – I strongly recommend something machine washable. A new mommy will certainly appreciate something that they can just throw into the wash when necessary.
The fabric need not necessarily be the same for both mommy and baby. You could coordinate fabrics – like a pattern for mommy and pick a solid colour for the baby, or vice versa. It is so easy to customize this to something that suits the style of the mommy and the baby.

You could also piece things together using 2 different fabrics. For instance – the baby hat could be a patterned fabric, but the band would be a solid or coordinating fabric. You could do the same for the mommy robe – the main part of the robe could be one fabric and if you choose the finish it with bands or a belt – you could use a second fabric for that. The possibilities are endless.
For my mommy and me hospital set, I used some double brushed poly that I got from a mystery box from So Sew English. This blue paisley fabric is a beautiful jewel tone and works for either a baby boy or a girl.
Double brushed poly is so soft and cozy. Since it is a bit heavier in weight and you want to make sure that the baby doesn’t overheat, I made the leggings and a hat. I was able to squeeze an XS robe and a mommy headband, as well as leggings and a hat (both 3 months sized) out of 2 yards of fabric.
In order to make a complete outfit for the baby, I personalized a onesie with some heat transfer vinyl. I love making personalized gifts and since this gift was for before the baby was born, and the gender was not known, I personalized it using the parents’ names. It’s so cute! If you want a bit more, throw in an easy sew flannel baby blanket or add a crocheted blanket. I just love baby gifts – there are so many things that you can make to welcome a special little one.
I was so excited to gift this mommy and me hospital set. The mommy-to-be was so happy to receive it.
