How To Make Diaper Centrepieces
You may have seen and read about my diaper cake on this blog post. But maybe you want something smaller. Maybe you want something to go on individual tables. Perhaps you want something to go with the diaper cake. Or maybe you have extra diapers and need something to make with them. Well here’s how to make diaper centrepieces.
Diaper centrepieces are basically just small or mini versions of the diaper cake. These are great on tables or if you just want something smaller for your baby shower. Depending on your setting, you may just prefer something smaller.
Smaller centrepieces mean fewer diapers, making this a more economical baby shower decoration.
Supplies to Make a Diaper Centrepiece
- Diapers – typically cheaper by the case. The number of diapers depends on the number of centrepieces you want to make. Look for sales. A small package of 38 diapers worked for this project. I made 6 centrepieces (10 or 11 diapers in each). I bought Pampers brand as that is what was on sale at the time. Consider getting a bigger size than what you think the baby needs. The parents will use the diapers eventually. I got size 2 diapers. You just don’t want to get diapers too small. I had some diapers left over from my diaper cake and I wanted to use them all up so this was the size that worked.
- Elastic bands – I got a bag of various sizes from the dollar store. You’ll want some small ones for the individual diapers, but you’ll also want some larger ones to hold the whole thing together. Remember, you can always wrap the larger ones around a couple of times so don’t worry about getting a ton of smaller elastic bands
- Wide ribbon – it has to be wide enough to cover your elastic bands, but not wider than the length of the diapers. I got burlap ribbon from the dollar store that was 2 inches wide. The colour and style can be anything you want to match the style or theme of the baby shower.
NOTE: you made need to “shape” the centrepieces to help make them more rounded as you add the ribbon. - Glue gun – to help secure the ribbon.
- Decorations – more on this later.
How to Make Diaper Centrepieces
- Roll individual diapers and secure with an elastic band in the centre. I prefer to roll with the open end first – I find it makes a cleaner look.
The number of diapers you roll depends on the number of centrepieces you are making. This may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t take long. I did mine while watching TV. - I made simple centrepieces, consisting of 11 diapers. Stand up 11 diapers and secure with a large elastic band.
If you want bigger centrepieces, you can make it wider or add a second layer. For directions on how to add another layer, refer to my post on how to make a diaper cake.
TIP – for the outside layer, I rotated the diapers so that the seam faces inwards. This way it’s all “smooth” on the outside, all the way around. This is purely for aesthetic purposes. - Wrap the diaper centrepiece with wide ribbon – this will cover up all the elastic bands. I used burlap ribbon and so I secured it with my glue gun. You would probably do something similar for any kind of fabric ribbon. If you are using a lighter, or thinner ribbon, double-sided tape may even work.
How to Decorate Your Diaper Centrepiece
Decorate your diaper centrepiece based on the theme of the baby shower or gender.
Top your centrepiece with a small stuffed animal (here’s how to personalize a stuffed animal with HTV), a small toy (rubber ducky) or flowers.
Use your Cricut or another cutting machine (or even scissors!), you can cut out shapes that go with the theme. Think ABCs, animals, baby symbols like onesies or diapers. You could cut out the baby’s name or first initial as well.
Make small cake toppers to put on top of your diaper centrepieces. Check out this blog post for directions on how to make a cake topper using your Cricut.
Making diaper centrepieces are quicker and easier as they use fewer diapers. These look wonderful on tables.
