How to Combine Crafts to Make an Easy Thank You Card
I love all kinds of crafts and I love creating things. I love it when I can combine the different crafts that I do and make something. Here’s an easy thank you card that combines 2 of my favourite crafts – Cricut and crochet. Thank you cards are a personal and meaningful expression of gratitude. I think it’s important to acknowledge other people and taking the time to write a thank you note is still, in my books, a good thing to do.
Making cards is lots of fun. There are some really elaborate designs out there, but sometimes simple is best. Recently I needed to make a bunch of thank you cards for people who got me a group gift. I wanted to thank each of them. There were about 15 people so I didn’t want it to be too complicated. I wanted something simple, yet cute, not to mention personal. Something that was “me”. They all know that I love creating and crafting so I came up with the idea of combining the print and cut feature on my Cricut Explore Air 2 with crochet.
Cricut – Make Your Card
I chose just to make a simple card – no folding. Just a simple card. I also just wanted simple wording – something sweet and to the point. I designed the graphic in Photoshop and uploaded it into Design Space as a print and cut item. You could also come up with a design in Design Space itself.
You may have to experiment with the size. You’ll want it to work with the heart. The first few times I printed on regular printer paper so that I could get the measurements right. In the end, my card is 4.5 inches square. This allowed me to print 2 per sheet of cardstock as the print and cut size is 9.25 x 6.75. I printed on simple, white 110lb cardstock. You could use anything. Thinking of using colour cardstock but worried that the Print and Cut feature won’t work since Cricut only likes white? Check this hack out that allows you to do print and cut on coloured paper. You can read all about it here.
Crochet – Make the Heart
To go with the card I crocheted a tiny heart. I used the easy pattern from Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom – you can find the pattern here. These tiny hearts are easy to make up and use very little yarn. I went through my stash and used up lots of little bits to make a bunch of these hearts. I used worsted weight yarn (category 4) and a G hook (4.25mm). The finished hearts measure 1.5 inches across. Aren’t they cute?
Combine Crafts – the fun part!
Now the fun part. I simply glued the tiny heart to the card. I just used Aleen’s tacky glue. I bet a glue gun would work too. A dollop in the centre is all it needs.
See? So simple and easy – yet personal and cute. All I needed to do was write the recipient’s name and sign them.
Variations on this Easy Thank You Card
The possibilities with this card are endless. Here are a number of variations and options you can do:
- Make the card more complex adding a fold to it. Print on the front and add your heart. Then write your thank you message inside.
- Add more layers – mount this card on some scrapbook paper to add more colour and another dimension to it.
- If you don’t crochet, there are many other things you can do instead of the heart. The dollar store contains a number of things that would work, like wooden or acrylic blanks. You could also used coloured vinyl or some other fancy vinyl like the shiny chrome stuff or holographic vinyl or even patterned vinyl. Since the hearts aren’t too big you don’t need too much – this may be a good way to use up scrap vinyl. Similarly you could also cut hearts out of scrapbook paper or origami paper. There are many patterns to choose from. The possibilities are endless!
