Holden Cable Hat | Crochet Pattern Review
Welcome to Day 3 of my 12 Days of Christmas projects. Today I am featuring the Holden Cable Hat.
This is a paid pattern by Lakeside Loops. You can find this designer’s website here. I have admired the patterns by this designer for quite some time. It features modern-looking styles in patterns that are straightforward and easy to follow. I love that I am supporting a fellow Canadian and that the designer uses yarn that is easily accessible by me.
My first Lakeside Loops pattern was the Kenzie Kimono. I made it last summer and loved it. The designer did use a fancier yarn that was out of my reach, but I was able to find a comparable yarn at Michaels. It turned out really well and I am quite pleased with it.
Since then, I have had my eye on a few of her patterns and just before the holidays bought a few of them as I wanted to make some Christmas presents.

I had been wanting to make a cabled hat with a faux fur pom for some time. They are quite popular now and I see them everywhere. We also had a cold snap just before Christmas (well, cold for here is not like cold in other places, but still it was cold) and so a thick and cozy cabled hat was really needed.
I’ve knit cables before but wanted to try crochet cables. The end result looks quite nice and is very comparable to the knit version. I enjoy learning new techniques.
Holden Cable Hat Pattern Review
The Holden Cable Hat pattern is easy to follow. The Lakeside Loops patterns come in a variety of sizes, complete with measurements so it is easy to figure out what size to make. I do, however, find the sizing to be quite big.
The Kenzie Kimono is actually a child’s size and I also ended up making the child size for the Holden Cable Hat. I guess I’m quite a petite person. I tend to be a loose crocheter and so my initial hat was also too wide. To remedy this I sized down to a 6mm hook. I also struggled with the length as the medium size (child’s size) was too short and the large size (adult size) was too long, so I had to make a modification to the pattern.
The difference between the two sizes is two rows (the two rows make a complete cable), but I really only needed one more row for that extra bit of length. Therefore, I had to modify the band part a bit in order to make it work. Luckily for me, after making it a couple of times, I understood how the pattern works and was able to make the alteration easily.
One of the recommended yarns for this pattern is Charisma by Loops and Threads. This is a readily available yarn at Michaels that comes in a variety of solids, tweeds and heathers. There are so many nice choices that I ended up getting lots of colours. Michaels had faux fur pom pom key chains on sale and I was able to grab a bunch in a number of colours in this as well. The faux fur pom pom makes such a nice, finishing touch to the Holden Cable Hat.
Once I got the sizing right, I was really happy with how they turned out and made a few of them as gifts for friends.
I made so many that I have a few extras. If you are interested in purchasing one, check out my Etsy Shop here.
Be sure to come back tomorrow where I will review the matching mitts to go with this hat.
